Product Information

Skanden biomass heating systems, though common in Europe, are totally different from anything else available in the US today. While traditional American systems are designed around a converted oil boiler, Skanden units are designed specifically for solid fuels and the dust, gas flow and variable moisture levels of solid fuels. Our units are 90-92% efficient, ultra-low emissions, and easy to maintain. Whereas glass, lava and slag build up in traditional systems and must be scraped out weekly; Skanden systems require minimal maintenance every three months. The differences are substantial.
Skanden Biomass Systems Traditional Converted-Oil Boiler Systems
  • Uses all biomass fuels, including wood, grains, and animal waste (requires feeding mechanism modifications)
  • Cannot use oil
  • Large combustion chamber for proper air flow
  • Standing tubes or horizontal tubes cleaned hydraulically
  • Fully automatic ash removal system
  • Never any slag, lava or glass
  • Easy maintenance 4x/year
  • 92% efficiency (confirmed by independent labs as required by EU regulations)
  • Multi-cyclone filtration
  • Ultra-low emissions (confirmed by independent labs as required by EU regulations)
  • Can only be fueled with one type of biomass (i.e., pellets or chips or corn, not all three)
  • Can use oil (requires feeding mechanism modifications)
  • Small combustion chamber and reduced air circulation
  • Horizontal tubing cleaned with compressed air
  • No automatic ash removal
  • Slag, lava and glass are formed and must be removed weekly
  • High weekly maintenance
  • 75-85% efficiency (as reported by manufacturer)
  • No filtration
  • High emissions (cannot be sold in most countries)
Skanden outsources manufacturing to cutting edge Scandinavian companies that specialize in biomass R&D and have biomass heating equipment that has been running smoothly for over 20 years old.

In Europe, a stronger focus on the environment, restrictive emission regulations, and adoption of Kyoto protocols, forced investment in renewable energy R&D. In Scandinavia, R&D has focused on thermal biomass. 40-50% of all facilities in Scandinavia are now heated with biomass fuels.

Skanden manufacturers collaborate with universities and top academic institutions on emissions reduction and efficiency improvement. They have research labs, which are shared with local universities and partially funded by the government. This type of government/industry collaboration has resulted in tremendous innovation, enabling us to have the best equipment in the world. Independent lab results confirm this. Our systems have been proven, in independent lab testing, to have the lowest emissions and highest efficiency, over low and high loads, of any biomass heating system in the world They are also the easy to maintain. Everything, from the feeding system to the ash removal, is fully automatic. Our systems come with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty.

  • Skanden MultiFuel Systems  (100kW - 5MW)
  • Skanden MultiFuel Minis (20 - 60kW)
  • Skanden Residential Pellet Systems (12kW and 22kW)
  • Skanden Boilerhouse
Skanden Energy can supply modular buildings to house both heating equipment and fuel (chips, pellets, briquettes, etc.)  Building facades can be designed to match existing architecture.
